Our Nogales Success Academy began in 2016. It was created to help Intervention 2 students to thrive at Nogales High School. We currently have 204 students who are involved in the program. Please read on to learn more about the program and what is expected of students who choose to participate in our academy:

It is the mission of the Nogales Success Academy to provide our students with social, emotional and academic support, so they can successfully transition and graduate from high school.

Programs

Course Title:

S.E.R.V.E. 

Course Description:

S.E.R.V.E. is an elective life skills course and academic support program available to students in grades 9-12 at Nogales High School in the Rowland Unified School District. S.E.R.V.E. is an acronym for five areas of need which all youth share. These life components are as follows:

1. Social
2. Emotional
3. Recreation
4. Vocation
5. Education

The SERVE curriculum and methodology addresses these areas in the context of a classroom format which is divided into three parts. On Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, staff and group leaders provide individualized assistance in courses students are currently enrolled. Emphasis on this phase of the class is on developing good study habits and to consistently complete homework assignments. On Tuesday, instruction is provided on contemporary life issues by the Instructor, Gear Up Therapist, Counselor, Guest Speakers who work in the fields related to topic areas, videos and other instructional resources. On Friday, the class is engaged in socialization activities which are of recreational or service nature.

In order for the student to benefit from the program they must be committed to taking responsibility for their academic success. They must also be willing to be accountable for choices made and accept the consequences of those choices.

Course Title:

HOUSE 9

Course Description:

The HOUSE program is a division of the Nogales Success Academy designed as a cohort of freshmen who take Algebra I, Biology, and English 9. These classes are taught in a smaller setting. They include unique instructional strategies, project based learning, individualized support in a nurturing, motivating environment. Our goal for these students is to possibly take an Honors or AVID class in 10th grade. This program is designed for the student who has unrealized potential due to environmental factors and is ready and willing to try something new and be receptive to the resources available to him/her.  We are not looking for ‘perfect’ students, we are looking for willing students who attempt to look at each day as a fresh start!

Interview and recommendation by Intervention Coordinator, counselor or House 9 teachers.

Course Title:

Opportunity

Course Description:

The Opportunity program is a tailored course of study for sophomores who are severely credit deficient.  A specifically designed schedule of classes, with additional support from an extra counselor, Intervention Coordinator and  Opportunity Teacher teacher, students are given an opportunity to recover credits lost during their freshman year to be back on track for graduation. Opportunity students complete their World History graduation requirements and recover lost or needed graduation credit through our online AVENTA courses. Students must demonstrate motivation to improve in academics and behavior to be in this program. They must also maintain regular attendance, so they can recover credits online in a timely manner. For two periods a day, students remain in one classroom to maximize their time earning credits. They also participate in various educational field trips, are offered individualized counseling as needed and are in a smaller class setting.

Course Title:

Freshmen Advisory

Course Description:

This course prepares students with organizational skills, social supports, and cultural awareness to feel confident as they begin their high school career. Students will develop strategies and resources to balance school, work, and personal commitments. Students will engage in team building and social-emotional exercises to prepare them for the challenges of navigating the high school experience. Students will enhance critical thinking skills through self-exploration and classroom experiences. They will gain collaborative skills through team problem-solving activities, discussions, and cultural experiences. Students will have daily instruction and scaffolding to strengthen knowledge and skills in Math and Science. They will be supported with tutorials and peer collaboration.
