Beginning Theatre

Articulation with Mt. SAC (Course THTR 9)

This course prepares students with an overview of the art of the theatre with an emphasis on performance activities including scene study, monologue work, pantomime, Reader’s and Children’s Theatre, Comedy Sports and improvisation, and oral interpretation. Technical work, such as set, lighting, makeup and sound design is also covered. Students are given the opportunity to become familiar with the latest techniques and technology in the profession and assess their importance to the art of the theatre.

Intermediate Theatre

Prerequisite: “B” or better in Beginning Theatre or recommendation of teacher 

Articulation with Mt. SAC (Course THTR 9)

This course prepares students for in-depth performance and production work including acting styles and period theatre, technical drafting of advanced design work, and application of theatre history to performance and design work. Student performances and projects are entered local and statewide competitions and festivals. Students also prepare productions to perform on and off campus in a variety of community outreach programs. This course is required for those students who wish to pursue the Theatre-Performing Arts pathway in the Arts & Communication Career Certification Program.

Advanced Theatre

Course ID 2621

Prerequisite: “B” or better in Beginning Intermediate or recommendation of teacher 

This course prepares students for the opportunity to study the most advanced techniques in performance/design and apply them to projects of their choice. Students have access to the most advanced technology available on site. Creativity is emphasized through a concentration on original work and individual interpretation. Each student is encouraged to develop his/her artistic voice. Advanced level student projects benefit both school and community. 

Theater Production

Students apply processes and skills in acting, designing, and producing formal, public theatre productions. Students undergo the entire rehearsal/production process as either a performer or technical support member. Student actors will make acting choices using script analysis, character research, reflection, and revision to create characterizations effectively portraying their role(s) in the play. Student technical staff will design technical elements, i.e., sets, props, costumes, hair and makeup, lighting and sound effects, and provide technical support during performances.

IB Theater

The IB Diploma Programme theatre course is a multifaceted theatre-making course. It gives students the opportunity to make theatre as creators, designers, directors and performers. It emphasizes the importance of working both individually and as part of an ensemble. It offers the opportunity to engage actively in the creative process of inquiring, developing, presenting and evaluating. Students are encouraged to work as inquisitive and imaginative artists, transforming ideas into action and communicating these to an audience.
