Nogales Inducts 84 New Students Into Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica

Nogales Presents the SHH Induction Ceremony by Jessica Esqueda Ederson Vega (NHS Senior)

On December 5th the Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica (SHH) held a beautiful induction ceremony to initiate its new members into the famed Honor Society. Sociedad Honoraria Hispánica (SHH) is an Honor Society founded in 1953 by the American teachers of Spanish and Portuguese with the mission of recognizing high school achievement in Spanish and Portuguese and to promote interest in Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian studies. In our school the Chapter takes the name of “Mario Benedetti” after a famous Uruguan poet. This year 84 new members were inducted by the Chapter’s President, Ms. Jessica Lazo and her Cabinet into SHH. A gathering of 400 people comprised of students, families, friends, faculty, and other guests witnessed the neophytes’ oath into the breast of SHH. Live performances such as singing, dancing, and poetry took place to engage the audience showing the talents of Ms. Zumaeta’s students. Community service by SHH members took place before, after, and during the induction, for SHH members assisted the club in its preparations. The advisor of SHH, Ms. Zumaeta, states, “SHH embraces our members to be leaders not only academically but culturally; at the induction members have the opportunity to showcase their talents and community service.” However, active membership is only open to Nobles with a B or higher grade in their upper level Spanish course and passing grades in all other classes; also members must fulfill the society’s requirements in regards to their participation and citizenship. The importance of being an active member is so that SHH members can be rewarded with an Honor Cord during their senior year.
