Nogales High gets new library, labs and classrooms
Marco Meza was busy shelving books on the front shelves, while Joseph Young juggled 10,000 textbooks in the back book vault.
The two were putting the finishing touches on the amazing new library at Nogales High School. The light, spacious area will open soon, the latest renovation at the Rowland Unified school.
"It's very beautiful, the best part is the skylights that let in the natural sunlight," said librarian Tatyana Makarova.
Meza, a 16-year-old junior, thought the library was a great addition to the local high school. Nogales has begun a major renovation, a face-lift of the busy campus.
"I think the new library is more organized and easier to use. It's much nicer than the old building," Meza said.
In fact, the new library is the old library, though you wouldn't be able to tell from the inside.
"The library was gutted down to its shell. The only thing left are the bricks," said Khary Knowles, senior project manager for Erickson-Hall Construction. "We rebuilt the entire library."
The $8 million modernization project is funded by a $118 million construction bond passed in 2006.
"We saved $30 million over the life of the bond through lower bids and other savings," said A.J. Mohindra, the district's chief financial officer. "We're spending that money on Nogales and Rowland high schools."
The state-of-the-art facility features a new digital network as well as all new utilities.
