Osvaldo Cervantes Gets Full Scholarship to College of his Choice: Harvard
LA PUENTE, CA – APRIL 25, 2019 – Nogales High School is proud to announce that Senior Osvaldo Cervantes has been selected for the prestigious Gates Scholarship award. Cervantes was chosen as one of 300 of this year’s Gates Scholars, the nation’s largest minority scholarship program that awards good-through-graduation scholarships to pursue degrees in any undergraduate major at the college or university of the recipients’ choice. Cervantes has been accepted to many colleges including Stanford and Yale, and has chosen to attend Harvard University to study biomedical engineering.
“I am thrilled to receive this scholarship. Knowing that I will be going to a small college, the relationships I have built here at Nogales High School have really aided me in the ability to create powerful relationships with my professors in the future,” said Cervantes.
In addition to financial assistance, Gates Scholars receive academic support, mentoring and leadership training. The Gates Scholarship will provide further support to Scholars, by engaging with them and their institutions in a variety of ways, to ensure they have access to the resources and services they need, from their first to last day of classes, through graduation and the transition to their chosen careers.
Cervantes is a National Merit Finalist, a Questbridge Scholarship winner, and attended PAYS, the Pomona College Academy for Youth Success, a three year summer program exposing students to a rigorous college environment including lectures and building relationships with professors, paving the way to college success. He will graduate from Nogales High School with a full International Baccalaureate Diploma. Cervantes is also a top track and field athlete.
Nogales High School is part of the Rowland Unified School District and is an International Baccalaureate World School that also offers a unique Career Certification Program for students.
